Regardless of what aspect of our lives one cares to examine, greed has replaced civic purpose, and the goal of market share has replaced democratic virtue at every turn. A case study in this phenomenon can be found in the current efforts among cities to create municipal internet networks, much to the consternation of Verizon and Comcast and the other marketers who would just as soon see the digital divide dug deeper between the rich and poor.
